Training Course “Fundamentals of Planning and Design for Cycling"
ViaStrada presents cycling planning and design courses at both fundamental and advanced levels. Over 700 people have attended these courses to date. This page contains background information on the Fundamentals course and its PowerPoint presentations can be downloaded from near the bottom of the page.
Since late 2003, a group of expert cycle practitioners has presented the one-day Fundamentals of Planning and Design for Cycling course to engineering and planning professionals and cycling advocates around New Zealand. ViaStrada Director Axel Wilke was the team leader for the course development. Axel won the 2005 CAN Award for the best cycling promotion for the course delivery.
LTNZ chair Jan Wright congratulating ViaStrada Director Axel Wilke
Axel and fellow ViaStrada director Andrew Macbeth teach most of the courses. Course content is continuously revised by ViaStrada to keep abreast of the evolving field of cycle planning and design.
Please see our training pages for upcoming professional development opportunities to either attend a Fundamentals or an Advanced course.
To enable practitioners to study the material, even if they haven't attended the course yet - or to follow up afterwards, the seven PowerPoint presentations are made available on our website. In addition, we hand out a copy of the NZ Supplement to Austroads Part 14 and the recently updated cycling-related MOTSAM pages at the courses. The course outline (indivdual presentations available for download below) is as follows:
Section 1: Introduction
Section 2: Meeting Cyclists' Needs
Section 3: Planning for Cycling
Section 4: Cycling between Intersections
Section 5: Cycling through Intersections
Section 6: Putting it all together
Section 7: Brickbats & Bouquets
