Biography

John has been with ViaStrada since January 2009.  He has had principal involvement in a variety of projects including:

  • Prioritising Pedestrians for a Vibrant Town Centre (Grey District Council)
  • Rapid transit corridor studies (Christchurch City Council)
  • Cycle counting programme development (Hamilton City Council)
  • University to city separated bicycle path scoping study (Christchurch City Council)
  • Cycle network planning (Christchurch, Taupo, Hamilton, Auckland, Upper Hutt)
  • Development of the Advanced Planning and Design for Cycling course (NZ Transport Agency)
  • Walking and cycling strategy preparation and peer reviews (Taupo, Invercargill, Upper Hutt)
  • SIDRA microsimulation modelling of intersections (various authorities)
  • Safety audits for intersection and road upgrades (various authorities)
  • Roads of National Significance (RoNS) in Christchurch policies and issues discussion paper (Christchurch City Council)
  • Central city speed reduction ("slow core") implementation plan (Christchurch City Council)
  • Economic evaluations of the Model Communities programmes (Hastings and New Plymouth District Councils)

John's Master of Engineering in Transport (MET) at the University of Canterbury included a research project on the use of probabilistic risk analysis in transport modelling and economic evaluation.

Prior to joining ViaStrada, he gained wide ranging experience in asset management, transport and land use planning while working for the Palmerston North City Council.  He authored the comprehensive Palmerston North Bus Stop Guidelines and managed the initial stages of the city bus terminal replacement project.

Prior to this, John started a bicycle store which achieved annual turnover of $1M just 18 months after opening.

For 12 years, John was a top-level US based professional road racing cyclist, and now promotes utility cycling as an integral part of transport and vibrant communities.
