One of the biggest challenges when managing temporary traffic management sites can be safely providing for people walking, biking, or on other wheeled devices. Sadly several people have been injured or even killed in or around sites across New Zealand over the years. To help address this, Civil Contractors New Zealand has worked to develop some industry guidelines on how to protect these vulnerable road users around work sites.
The resulting Practice Note https://civilcontractors.co.nz/ttm-practice-note/21279/ (to accompany the NZ Guide for Temporary Traffic Management) was prepared by Dave Tilton of Parallaxx Limited and has now been publicly launched. The document is a modular graphics-rich guide, with practical advice for people at all stages of the TTM planning and implementation process.
ViaStrada’s Glen Koorey was privileged to be one of the peer reviewers for the draft guidance (along with Bridget Doran and Dan Sullivan). This builds on his considerable experience in temporary traffic management, walking and cycling safety, and the development of industry guidelines for over 20 years. Glen undertook a technical review of the draft Practice Note and provided feedback and suggestions on practical and procedural issues, as well as layout and grammar aspects.
We now look forward to the successful implementation of these guidelines at work sites across the country!
